To me, understanding is about logic and knowing is about feeling and truth. We may know something without understanding why, but that doesn't make it any less valid. For example, I KNOW the sky is blue. I don't entirely understand why.

a math problem is a good example
say you know the answer is 5 thats knowing
but do you understand why the answer is 5 thats where thye understanding part comes in

Understanding = comprehend the depth of it, or the result of it
Knowing = just the surface of it.
