Dont listen to any of the negative comments. I came in to the military almost exactly 2 months after the planes hit the towers. It was the greatest move I could of made. I have a great family now. I go to college for free and the pay aint to bad because your housing and all that is free. Yes you might end up going to war. It all depends on your branch and job. I have only been in almost 5 years and have been overseas twice. On the other hand my dad has been in about 20 and has only gone once.
The militlary is a great and respected way to make a life but just remember if you wait until the war is over theres no telling if another one is going to kick off a year later.
Our job in the military so to protect American assets and to go to war. If you that is something you dont want to do then dont join. Trust me, if you join just for the benfits it will show and you will be threaded out.
What ever you decide is up to you. Just make sure you think about it. I love the life but its not for everyone.

If you don't mind being deployed for an indefinite time overseas and you live in a one-gas station town with nothing to do on Saturday night but drink in some hall with a moose head on the wall, then sure.
I'm not being facetious. When I was 19 I broke my elbow and the recruiters stopped calling. Now the physical standards have dropped enough to take me even though I can't straighten my left arm. I'm still young enough to enlist, but if I did I'd take a huge cut in pay and possibly lose my house and then come back home to what?
Right now there are millions of young guys out there who can't afford college, the factory in town got moved overseas, farms are being foreclosed, the shops on Main Street are boarded up and the only place to work is a Wal-Mart 40 miles away. The Service is the only way out.
On the other hand, if you can make at least $10 an hour with medical and retirement, then don't go. I mean it.

No matter when you sign up, you are signing up to fight if your country needs you. It's really a personal choice, and others can only tell you their opinions.
Personally, I'm a veteran and in the process of re-joining(reserves this time), so I would say not an issue for me. A friend of mine, a MG, told me reserves is something you should wait on. In other words, if you go reserves odds are high you'll be going to Iraq.

Consider your reasons for wanting to be in the military. To serve proudly - or for mainly other reasons. You seem to be wondering if you could get deployed into a war zone - YES it's very possible. Are you prepared to handle that?

Patriotism is demanded from citizens for the country to survive and pursue its interests abroad. Thus, joining the military is a noble choice to serve the country.

It's not a bad time, but things are changing. If you join now, dont be suprised to be sent to Iraq or Korea. On the other hand, you'll get training and go places you could barely dream of.

It depends on why you are joining.
If you want to serve and be part of things more important than yourself - then this is a good time to join.
If you are only looking for some benefit - then it is probably a bad time to join.
