One thing that I really like about your question is that it forces the answerer to find the element in common with all addictions, because you haven't identified yours.

One of the biggest factors is an "addictive personality". That is, five people may be exposed to a potentially addictive substance or behavior, and only one might succomb to addiction. Why is that?

Part of the answer is in our physical make-up. For some people, the time that it takes for alcohol or cocaine to establish a physical dependance in the cells is far less than the norm. If there is a history of addiction in your family tree to a particular substance, such as alcohol, there might be a tracable physical characteristic in your body's metabolism that may provide answers (the way you process sugars, for example)

In most cases, however, the cause for addiction has its roots in emotions. Often the pain we try to conceal and live with on a daily basis becomes overwhelming, and it is simply easier to "self-medicate" with a behavior or substance that seems to make the pain go away. Unfortunately, what starts as an effort to "take the edge off" can soon become a pattern of behavior that controls our lives.

In any event, no one gets the better of an addiction unless they are willing to face their fears and come to terms with the scary emotional monsters that got them to that place of dependancy.
This is not a journey to take alone. Find someone that has a great deal of compassion and expertise to walk with you as you successfully overcome your addiction. You must be prepared to be painfully honest with them and yourself. But at the end of the day, you will win, and lead a life free of the emotional and physical bondage that traps you today.

Good luck and God bless you.

you need to understand what you are hiding from (fear, self esteem) and then take corrective action. Perhaps a 12 step program depending on what the addiction is.

Stop doing whatever it is you are doing that you consider an addiction. You are the only one that can make your stop. Stop thinking about it and just stop.

Find a support group - they have many different ones for every addiction possible. Also, find a therapist - it would help.

If you could answer that, you'd be a millionaire. You need therapy and treatment.
