Signs that a dog is scared... hair standing up, tail not wagging, growling, head hung low, tail between his legs.... these are all signs that your dog's "stairway doesn't go all the way to his attic". My advice is if you have an animal in your home that you don't trust, why keep him/her? Remember, you love your pet unconditionally, but it IS still an animal and can do harm. It's not worth the love you receive from your pet if you or your family is in danger.

I have two dogs and if you rub their tummy it is a sign of great trust. Their descendents, wolves, would sometimes have to roll over on their belly so that the leader could scratch it out because that wolf did something wrong. But, trust me, ALL dogs love having their belly rubbed. If the dog has been abused, it might be a little harder to find trust. Don't smack the dog if it does something wrong except on the nose, and PRETTY LIGHTLY, too. You don't want your doggies afraid of you!!!! Good luck with everything!

Most dogs will general give you a sign if they trust you or not. Small dogs will general try to sit on you or let you rub their tummies. Large dogs will try to sit near you and again let you rub their tummies. Generally speaking if the dog lets you touch them, they probably aren't scared of you. Take note if the dog is flinching from you or if they move away when you make sudden movements.

a simple and easy way. First, will the dog let you pet its head? If so, will it let you pet its back? If so, will it let you play with its tail and legs? If so, will it let you lay them down and roll them over so you could scratch their belly? will they stay down when you pet them? If you answer yes to everyone of these questions and the dog doesn't snap or try and bite you, NOT MOUTHING, but biting, then they trust you.

Approach them very slowly with your hand slightly outstretched and speak in a low soothing voice. If they let you touch them then slowly rub their ears. If they back away then keep trying. If they snap or growl at you then they don't trust you.

If you can put your face in they're food bowl while they eat and nothing happens...seriously I do it from time to time....And that's trust.
