I don't think there are any hard fast rules on this, however generally a close friend throws the baby shower. Hey, for future reference if you want to throw your own shower or special party you should do so, you make the rules for you, everything else is simply tradition.

I personally thought it would be ok for your mother-in-law to throw a shower. Even if the rules say otherwise. Who's that strict now days? I looked it up and found this:
Who should throw a baby shower?
Anyone except the expectant couple — though Miss Manners might disagree. Formal etiquette says that someone who's not a relative must throw the shower to avoid having it look as though the family is asking for presents. Our advice? Ignore traditional rules. Any relative, close friend, or close co-worker should feel perfectly okay about planning a baby shower.
I say you're probably right on this but for the sake of your health and good karma....let it go. What's past is past. :)

Man, can you ever hold a grudge! There was absolutely no reason for your mother-in-law to throw you a bridal shower. Didn't you wonder why your friends or sisters didn't do this? By the way, not everyone has baby showers, either. Three kids later, I'm sure you have enough baby stuff.

I'm not sure if it's etiquette but I haven't heard of a mother-in-law throwing a baby shower. It was always either the best friend, the sister, or the sister-in-law. Both of my sister-in-laws had baby showers thrown for them by their sisters.

I guess that someone else other than family is supposed to give the shower. Look times have changed and I personally think your mother in law is full of baloney. My husband's mother wouldn't have even thought about giving me one so don't feel bad. We're just going to be better Mom in laws than they are.

Like many other here, my mother-in-law hosted my baby shower. We have a rather large, tight-knit family so in my case it really wouldn't have mattered because if it hadn't been my MIL, it would have been one of the other women and we are all related in some form or fashion. We didn't care anyway. She did what she knew we would like and everyone had a great time. We even had the men there and it was great.

Well, usually a friend does throw the baby shower, but others can throw it as well, but if she were a good mother in law, and friend, she should of step up and thrown one for you.

It's true. It's considered poor etiquette for a family member to throw you a bridal shower or baby shower.

Not sure if that is true or not but I was told with my first son that it is the job of the god parents to throw the baby shower. But in my opinion ANYONE can throw a baby shower, even if it is a second or third child!

Formal etiquette says that someone who's not a relative must throw the shower to avoid having it look as though the family is asking for presents. but this is largely in the past.
