Ok - seriously - read "Natural Family Planning" (and think: "best way to get pregnant"), the so-called "piety" in forcing monks, nuns, and priests to be celibate, and many jihadists' dreams of 77 black-eyed virgins in heaven etc etc etc.... Am I the only one to notice that? (I am Presbyterian).

Both Catholics and Muslims seem to spend a lot of energy around: the holiness in not having sex, having sex on a special schedule (a la NFP), etc. etc. etc.

Mishy, I noticed your avatar has dark eyes so you better get busy so you aren't one of the 77.
Unlike you I occasionally like to be provocative and sometimes really offensive. So here goes.
Most cultures that have big restrictions on sexual conduct, have ugly pencil ***** in power who want to keep it that way. It's called conservative and they want to conserve their power. The restrictions usually involve women, not men. Penalties for women violating the codes are big and small for men because the men don't really take the rules seriously. The reason they don't take the rules seriously is biological: men evolved to broadcast their seed. Women evolved to find a stable mate that will feed and protect the mother and child until the child is an adult. Women subscribe to religion to keep men attached to them after the children have flown the nest. That is until recently when statistics show that evangelical Christians have the same number of divorces and abortions per capita as any other group.
Love those Presbyterians, they know how to throw a party.

It's not just Catholics and Muslims. It's religious people in general.

For example, right-wing Christians in the US are going crazy over the fact that nothing is done about it when two guys have sex. Oh, boo-hoo. How's it hurt them?

God just really has an unhealthy preoccupation with sex. And for the Judeo-Christian God, with foreskins. Told the Israeli army to cut off some huge number (400? I don't remember) of the Philistine's foreskins. Woo-hoo. God loves him some penis, yes he does.

And God seemed pretty upset when Adam and Eve put some clothes on. He seems to have a pretty dirty mind.

Look around our society is obsessed with sex. You can't watch a show, movie, or even a commercial without being exposed to it. Why has something that was meant as an intimate experience between 2 people becom a hot topic.

I don't think Catholics are obsessed with sex any more than other humans.

Monks, nuns, and priests voluntarily take vows of chastity after much soul searching following the examples of Jesus Christ., St. John the Baptist, and St Paul.

With love in Christ.

Piety is defined by living as Christ did. Now being human what did "we" see during Jesus's life here - well he was SINGLE and never was in a relationship (I mean MARRIED) - SO again trying to follow Jesus humans controled their urges - greed, sex, gluttony, etc trying hard to be as close to Jesus as possible. WHY? Well because Jesus proved to them he is GOD and is in heaven waiting for us. That's pretty powerful insentive for humans. NOW THE HARD PART - BEING HUMAN MANY FAILED! EASILY, QUICKLY AND TO THE EMBARASSMENT OF ALL. But of course they failed, whenever you exclude things from your life - you've given power to those things. Try not thinking of pizza and you'll think of pizza. Now try watching your family/city/people go hungry, etc - and you'd be tempted to cheat some help their way. (or cover up mistakes of friends, etc.)
Also about sex - the early law givers were trying to do was insure that there would be healthy people in the city/country - diseases were killing many, which in turn weakens your country - which leads to being enslaved by your neighbor.
The reward for doing something dangerous is what your refering to (77 virgins/entrance into heaven, etc) These are needed because few are fanantical enough to actually do the horrors requested. Catholics (I hope) stopped doing this back in the knights time. Catholics have had a growth to a world view - work on individual soul gathering - not whole countries - as in the past. It's slower but less violent - which is very good, insures a better understanding of being Catholic. (instead of worrying about being killed) Catholics used to convert-or-die whole countries, luckily this has stopped, as I understand (believe).
Sex for fun was NOT available untill - what the 1970's? I mean if you had sex most likely you'd produce a child. Today the prevention of this is better - not 100% but better. So sex is back - again I see this as a non issue because I WILL NOT go door to door to check on peoples private lives. Sorry.
But the religions of the world do not want repeats of the diseases of the past. So morals are taught, and followed. How to prepare food for eating, water safety, sex, travel, etc.
Also peoples lives change when they accept children in their lives to raise. Distractions in the childrens lives are proven to result in poorer attention at school - which REALLY DOES translate into NOT getting into a learning tract (higher education) - and having to go to the working tract (well Mcjob I guess for some) - this leds to frustration - coping with preceived failure - which spirals DOWN to vices.
SEX sells - it's the openning act to controlling unwanted urges when people are trying to BETTER themselves. It's the quickest way to get a crowd to present ideas for change.
As comedians say all the time "want less sex in your life - get married."

It's just another way to control the masses. There are a lot of people who will always have serious psychological damage that affects their personal relationships because of the unnatural demands that religion puts on people.

Muslims are afraid of sex. They just have sex to have kids. After the kids I think they stop having sex. Catholics love gay sex and sex with kids. **NOTE: This is my opinion and this statement is not intended to offend anyone, I am only exercising my right to free speech. Save any feedback/comments for yourself.

Yeah, I've noticed that they seem to like the idea of having lots of children. That could be because they want as many members as possible...

You're right, though. Despite the facade arund their teachings, they seem centered around the sacred chalice and blade...
