I have a hunch a cat would attack and eat a small snake. Reason: my cat likes to play with snake-like toys, and I also saw (on TV) an African wild cat kill and eat a snake. I'd like to know if my hunch is rignt.

Some one suggested that cats instinctively know which snakes are venenous. I wonder if that is true...

I have seen my three cats (primarily the two younger ones) "toy" with a garter snake, but I've never seen them kill one. I think they do this just 'cause the snake wiggles.

I found a large garter snake in my bathtub one night -- never did figure out how it got there. I caught it and put it out. I don't think the cats ever knew it was there.

As for cats knowing if a snake is venomous, I can't answer your question. When I was a social worker in southern California, one of my consumers had a cat that was bitten by a rattlesnake and died. Obviously, the cat didn't know the snake was poisonous.

Hope this helps!

sand cats in the sahara can kill venemous puff adders and eat them. my kitten once killed a garter snake and brought it to our backyard, but didn't eat it, even my 9yearold cat saw a snake and chased it, i think its instinct

the cat will kill the snake. they are born hunters. my friend's cat has brought gifts of lizards and rats and snakes for her after they killed them. no need to test your theory. :)

A cat would either kill it or freak out. My cat would probably freak out.
