Marcel Duchamp, sort of in reply to a poster above me. He's a Dadaist "painter". The name of the group--Dada--came from the French word for "hobbyhorse", supposedly chosen randomly. The movement is rather nihilistic and irrational. Now I haven't seen your copy of the ship wreck painting, but one of his more famous and egregious paintings was one where he took out a reprint of Mona Lisa and penciled in a moustache.
But this is probably not the same guy. L. Duchamp and a painting of ship wreck...Maybe he's one of those painters who was little known, as there are many?
Here is a site that may be useful later on, even though I can't find L. Duchamp in it.

Ellie is right. Both Duchamp and Man Ray liked to turn their noses up at critics and some collectors and they both altered their name from time to time while doing so.
But Duchamp painting a ship wreak? It's possible he could have done so during his earlier years. Most artists start out working in more realistic styles.
Get it appraised.

Sounds absolutely delightful and by the way Duchamp did indeed at times sign with an L..it was his way to make a mockery of mass production.By all means be careful with your painting and have it appraised. Good Luck

My Fiance is a Painting Contractor for the last 35 years. He says Oil base Primer is the best Primer to get A good coverage and it seals over the old paint on your walls better than Water base. Alot of people do use the water base Primer now, because it cleans up well, no fumes and it drys faster. Maybe your Painter thought your walls needed the Oil Base for your walls to look better. It is easier for him to use the Latex, because he does have to smell the stuff when hes painting. Yes leave your Windows open as much as possible.

We have a signed L Duchamp oil on canvas depicting washer women. The signature matches another L Duchamp of a cubist clown placed on Ebay in 2015 and also matched a Duchamp signature (with no L) on a Marcel Duchamp early painting seen on the internet. Our canvas is stapled to the stretcher indicating a more recent work but it could have had a stretcher change. Anyone have any clue as to what we may have?
