Hi, thanks for taking the time to answer this! My very good friend just found out yesterday that she's five weeks pregnant. I want to get her something, not too baby related, because she's not that excited yet. I know she will be, I just want to get her something to show her how happy I am for her.

I would give her a simple basket with soaps, lotions, candles, sweet smelling stuff... body wash.. girly stuff for her to use just for her.. She's probably not quite ready to start focusing on obtaining baby clothes. Maybe you can ask her if you can give her a baby shower eventually? Or better yet check with her mom or whoever she is close to to tell them you want to participate in planning a shower for her.. For now though just give her stuff so that she can take care of and pamper herself.

Just send her some flowers or a Just thinking of you card. I would avoid any baby gift things until she is through the first trimester. When I was pregnant I didn't want anything baby related around until further into the pregnancy.. I guess I was afraid someting would go wrond and I'd be left looking at some baby book or outfit. 5 weeks is still really early so maybe something simple like a little card , flowers or take her out to lunch but save the "baby" stuff for atleast 12wks or later. Esp. if this is her first baby.

The What to Expect When You're Expecting is a good book to give as a gift. A subscription to Fit Pregnancy if she's into fitness. How about a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant...she's about to be really hungry all the time! You could get her a baggy t-shirt and iron on little rhinestones that say "mom-to-be". You can find pregnancy journals at Hallmark or Babies-r-us, those are pretty cute.

You're sweet to buy her a gift, she'll love it no matter what you get her, because it's the thought that counts!

I like the idea of a good prenatal book too, but I wasn't thrilled with What to Expect... It focuses on all the problems that could arise with pregnancy, in my opinion. I did like Pregnancy Week by Week. Some relaxation CDs or a prenatal massage might be a great gift too, especially down the line.

If you can cook, this is a best time to invite her over for a cup of tea or dinner.

If you can't cook, then take her out to dinner to a nice eating place. Some place that makes her feel relax and enjoy her time with you.

You do not need to buy a gift now, I think the best time to buy gift for pregnant friends is after having the baby.

Get a good pregnancy/ first year book (anything by Dr. Sears) and/or a gift certificate to get a manicure and pedicure. Or just take her out and treat her to the mani/pedi and give her the book there. Don't buy any baby stuff yet.

A spa treatment gift like a manicure or pedicure gift. A new shirt that's stylish but pregnancy freindly. A IOU a free night of baby sitting.

I also have a friend who just found out she is pregnant and she is happy about it. The best gift is enthusiasm and support. Start getting her diapers; you would not believe how expensive they are. Good Luck to both of you.

Get her "What to Expect when you're Expecting". It's a great book while you're pregnant. Don't buy anything for the baby yet. It's too soon and bad luck.
