It's the additives, quinine in tonic and salt in seltzer. In addition, MA has slightly different regional terms. I think "tonic" can be used the way NYers use "soda"

Well , Tonic water has Quinine in it and is bitter. Selzter and club soda are similar , except Seltzer has less sodium in it.

Club soda is sweet like other pop and can be consumed alone. Seltzer water is weird and tastes kind of 'salty' and unsweet and is awful consumed alone. tonic water is much less sweet in taste than club soda and is refreshing alone or in a mixed drink.

I am drinking lemon/lime selzer as I read this. There is a big difference...in taste.....they are not the same...I know cause if someone mixes up your order..you can bearly drink it...
