If you don't believe in God or His Son Jesus Christ, why do you feel the need to participate in these discussions? And if you must participate, why must you be so derogitory?

Just a question I have always wanted to ask.

There are attacks from both sides; you're right that all of us need to be more respectful of others' opinions. I think it's important to consider that the real god requires no defense and, when one realizes this, is never offended when someone seemingly disrespects god. I think it's also helpful to consider that many people are turned off by the fictional gods that we see in many religions - the ones that are obvious projections of people's egos and, therefore, are used to support the concepts of sin, guilt, hell, saved, unsaved, reward, punishment. etc. When people are rigidly attached to their concepts of god, there's no room for discussion. If we want islamic terrorists who blow people up on buses for Allah to change, then we have to realize that they do the same thing that any fundamentalist does: rigidly attach themselves to concepts that they rarely question and consider to be the absolute truth.

Why at the same time do you denounce their faith or if in the case be a lack there of? Discussion is discussion, and the best way to evaluate what one believes is through the discussion of the topic. Your are supposed to believe in God, not be taught to belive in him, so why then shouldn't we be able to discuss what we believe? I think everyone has a need to know what all is out there and what everyone else says on the matter before being able to evaluate what they think. To answer the latter, being derogitory isn't necessary but then again, your idea of derogitory and theirs is obviously different.

This god of yours is being used to control people. They have sold you on the idea that the ultimate goal of religion is the end of the world and because you have swallowed that pile of bilge, you actively look forward to it. That's my world your screwing with and before some deluded idiot takes it into his head to start a nuclear war to fulfill his stupid religions prophesy, I will resist and participate in these discussions even though arguing with a Christian is like playing chess with a pigeon, they knock over all the pieces, crap on the board, then fly home to their flock to declare victory.

Considering that you are asking the question of Atheists, I hope the best answer you choose is the best answer from those you directed it at and not all the people answering who just support your prejudices

Well alot of people come to the "SOCIAL & CULTURE" page where religion just so happens to be.
People bag out god when answering questions, and christians tell us athiests were going to hell when they answer certain questions, I like to say the word maturity comes into things, and you can almost guarantee the people that are being derogitory are teenagers!

I think........
They are trying to just be mean to us or a way to make us mad. It bothers me to see so many people that don't believe in God. I can't understand it and I pray for the ones that don't believe. Which maybe silly but it makes me feel better.
I also think they are searching for something. I just hate when I ask a religious question or am answering one to see so many gang up saying we are dumb or God isn't real...
☺

Because this is the "religion and spirituality" section, not just the Christianity section. In case you hadn't noticed, Freedom of Religion does *not* just mean freedom of Christianity.

You must remember GS, that if there's good and a God, there's also evil and a Devil.
You have to expect it and ignore it.
