I've always wanted to be fluent in spanish and just haven't got it down. Any suggestions, keeping in mind that I'm a regular working joe so I can only do this on my spare time.

If you can't have total immersion:

--Talk to Spanish-speaking coworkers
--Find music in Spanish that you like. Try to transcribe the words. When you get stuck, ask somebody to help. I've done this a lot, and my Spanish-speaking friends loved to help.
--Watch movies in Spanish with English subtitles and vice-versa. This and the music work very well to help you learn slang and just the actual way the language is spoken by native speakers, not out of a book or off of cheesy tapes. No matter what they advertise, the tapes are cheesy and nobody talks like that in real life.
--Get yourself a Spanish-speaking honey! :) If you fall in love, that is.

Learn a few nouns and verbs. If you know someone who speaks Spanish, imagine having a conversation with them. It is not important that you know all the words, but include ones you do know. Get a Spanish dictionary with grammar rules in it, and when you need a spare word, when you have some vocab down, you can easily access it.

My fiance used books on tape and during his 30 minute commute to work each morning he would pop it in and listen to it.

Also, it never hurts to be able to take a class. If you have the time in the evening and the money, it may not hurt to take a class from a local community college. Most should offer evening classes.

Learning a new language will take time, but once you get the learning concepts down you'll be fine.

purchase some Spanish movies/ dramas video CDs and I think it helps you a bit. Listen to CD that teaching Spanish is useful too. I used to listen to a self-Spanish teaching disc when I sleep. But I think watching Spanish dramas on the TV is more interesting.

immersion into the language, go to the country where the language is spoken...you'll pick it up much more quickly than sitting in a classroom or by studying alone.
