The 4 step is the most basic. You should learn (or teach) that first. You can get much higher (most people at least a couple of inches) with a 4 step approach. 3 step should be used in transition when you really don't have enough time to get to 4 or when you are running much quicker plays and don't have time to get to 4.

Well, I think 3 step approach will be way better for you if your are small and if ur are tall I would suggest that you use a five step approach because with 4 step approach you might jump of the wrong foot and not get the hight. So I would say 3 for small people and 5 for tall people.

Coaches teach their outside hitters to use a 4-step approach and they teach their middle blockers to use a 3-step. This allows for the middle blockers to be ready for a quick set.

I think you'll just get mixed answers for this but everywhere I have been taught which was my middle school, high school, and two different camps, including help from some extremely high-on-the-totem-pole volleyball players have all taught me the 3 step approach but I guess whatever works best for you.
