A potato salad recipe from the Martha Stewart website calls for scallions, thinly sliced. I haven't heard of this ingredient.

Scallions are green onions. They're long and thin, with a small white bulb at the bottom end (about the size of a pea, maybe a little larger). The white goes to green as you go farther up.

The whole thing is edible but most people just use the green part. trim off the very top because it's usually a little dried up.

Scallions are also called green onions and spring onions. They have a mild onion flavor and generally do not have a bulb. To prep...just slice off the root bottom, remove outer layer if necessary, then slice across making little discs.

A scallion is a type of onion. There is a long green multiple 'stem' and a small onion at the base. Check out your produce department at your favorite grocery store and if you can't find scallions, ask for them. They really are very tasty.
