I am getting so tired of everything having to be in spanish along with english. When my ancestors came to America they didn't get special help and documents in there native tongue so why should they! Any one out there agree?

And to all that is wondering I am part native American, I'm a part of the rosebud Sioux nation. and yes I do speak some spanish, I just think that it is rude to come into a country and not know how to speak its basic language, although it looks as though english may soon be the minority!

Yes, I'm sure lots of people agree. After being in Canada for a week my ideas on this kind of mellowed out. A lot of the places and people spoke no English and some places didn't have their signs or anything in English...so I was pretty lost. Now that I'm home again I try to be more tolerant of the fact that there are a lot of people in the United States that do not speak English nor do they read English....a lot of those now live in the same city as me. I was visiting Canada...and I know we're talking about people who actually live in a place and don't speak their language. Pretty sad. But, I know I was not happy at work when I found out that we'd have to learn to speak a foreign language within 2 years. I think if people are going to "live" (not visit) here they should learn to speak the language.... not us try to learn all these languages for all these people coming here from everywhere!

Were your relatives already here, and did we steal this country from them? No? Okay, so deal with it. The people who originally owned the majority of this country can have a paragraph or two on the McDonalds menu, in my opinion. Do you read spanish? If not then what the fuckdoyou care? Do you think that people in Eastern Canada are tired of having a French version of everything right next to the English? Have you ever been to another country? Everywhere in Europe they have signs not just in their own native tongue, but in French, Spanish, Farsi, Japanese, Korean, English, and on and on. So who givesafuck? What would you rather have, spanish versions of things, or would you rather just learn spanish and then be the designated person who has to translate to all the spanish speakers what is written in english? You're a total boob.

Yes I agree but I haven't always. Its reached a ridiculous level. Not just Spanish. We need to have an official language for just that purpose all government required forms, road signs etc. would be in that language.
I was a little sensitive about the idea of an offical language. I grew up with my mothers stories of being beaten at school for speaking spanish. In rural New Mexico where she grew up Spanish was the language used in the home.
I don't care what language people what to use to talk among themselves but official written communication should be in English and that should be our official language.

It doesn't bother me so much as the illegals and the fact that people don't even know English. The fact that you can take your US citizenship test in Spanish is appalling.
To all those people saying to learn the language of the people who were here before us, are you f-ing retarted? The people who were here before us were the native Americans they spoke languages like Cheroke and every tribe had a different language Hell the Myans didn't even speak Spanish. Spanish came here from guess where SPAIN! When Europe so kindly invaded and Claimed the US for itself they brought their languages with them.

Don't even get me started on that question. If you live here, you ought to be made to learn the language. The United States has always prided itself on being a melting pot - well we have melted outselves right into 9 - 11. How else could they have gotten over here without being noticed? We have welcomed every piece of trash and rif raft until....oh well.....I know there are also some good people who have come over and made contributions to our society.
What other country can our spanish speaking friends go to and the people of that country be made to learn a second language in order to cope with the spanish speakers. None my friend. Like I said, don't even get me started.

No. Because today we have the means to have a multilingual society. I'm all for an America with more than one language. Why are Americans so against diversity and differences? Some countries have several nationally recognized languages. Would it hurt to learn a second language?

I been living in America practically my whole life except for this one month which when I was out of the country. Anyways, I would say I enjoy learning Spanish, since most of my friends are Latino, plus I also enjoy learning other languages as well, just to have better communication with others, and such on.

Wanna see something weird? It all happened because of the Puertoricans. Because Puertoricans are legitimate us citizens and had a small language disadvantage they had the right to have everything made understood to them, so in the late 60's the government in the state of New York decided to give them the benefit of translations. Some how it grew out of proportion when many illegal inmigrants posed as Puertoricans and requested more material. Then it started, and it has'nt stopped... and yes it is a little bothersome... specially if you are Puertorican and you see many posing as you... and make you look less educated... i do understand the reasons.. but it's a little ... weird.

Yes. All previous immigrant groups immediately sought to speak English. They pledged themselves as Americans.
So many Mexican immigrants insist upon speaking Spanish and wave Mexican flags. They want to be both.
Look back to WWII when German and Italian immigrants went to Europe to fight, as Americans. They didn't wave Italian or German flags. They were Americans.
Look at all of the immigrants from China. They're able to learn English. They don't need bank ATMs in Chinese or voting materials in Chinese.
Thus, it appears, Spanish speakers are too stupid or lazy to learn English. What else can be concluded?
