Yes, they really are necessary. I am yet to get my own retainer, but I know many people who have wasted so much money on braces because they did not wear their retainer afterwards. Braces move your teeth to where they should be, and retainers keep them there. Also, you are under the false impression that retainers must be worn forever. In actuality, most retainers are worn for two years at most. Additionally, many orthodontists include the retainer in the cost of braces, so they don't really get any 'extra' profit.

even if there were somplace to buy them from, you can't get a generic one and expect it to fit. When they made yours, they took impressions. (those mouthfuls of goop). The lab technician uses your impressions to make stone casts of your teeth. On those casts the technician makes your retainer by hand. All the wires are bent to exactly fit your mouth. All the acrylic is matched exactly to your tissue. If you don't believe me, try wearing someone else's retainer (yuck).

However if you really want to see someplace where a retainer could be ordered.

you want a hawley retainer. However you have to send them casts and have a dentist or orthodontist sign off the order. My bet is that's not going to happen without sitting in the doctor's chair and becoming a patient.

Retainers have to be custom made for your mouth. Go back to your orthodontist. If that's not an option, find another orthodontist so that they can make an impression for you.

No - this is impossible - retainers are custom made for an individual - plus it is illegal for anybody other thatn a health prof to prescribe or deliver a retainer

www.retainers4you.com. They work totally on the internet, but will need a computer scan of a clean set of polyvinylsiloxane impressions of both arches. You can do that at home, right?
