Swords were the first weapons used for war. Rocks were only used on a small scale but organized warfare using phalanx formations used swords and spears.

First weapon prob was a rock, but used in war, like, actual war, tribe vs tribe, rather than man vs soon-to-be-dinner or man vs man-who-took-his-soon-to-be-dinner ... it was the spear - the first martial weapon. A jagged sharp rock tied to a stick, but a spear none the less.

First there was the fist, then the fist with a rock in it, then a bigger rock, then a heavy stick, then a sharpened stick ... the progression goes on and on.
