We all know that God created the universe sometime around 4000BC (according to the young creationists).

We also know God is eternal.

So what was God doing before he created the universe? Was he floating around in the dark for billions upon countless billions of years? Doing what?

my guess , from watching "nova" is that the universe as GOD never ends and never began... and we as humans are not "wired " to understand that concept more than the big bang started an expansion of the universe and some day it will implode[ is that the right word] on itself , returning to its tinny form before the big bang ... then explode and expand all over again....and on and on just as it has done from the "beginning"[ whatever that was ... i said we cant fathom that!] do i believe i GOD? of course i do ... that which created the univers and every thing in it is God... yet another thing we are not "wired to full comprehend.. but only a fool refuses to see the proof.

"We all know that God created the universe sometime around 4000BC (according to the young creationists)."

We ALL know? Speak for yourself.

Even if there is a god (no proof), and he is a he, and he did create the Universe, that 4000BC figure was arrived at by one James Ussher (1581-1656), Archbishop and Roman Catholic primate of Ireland.

Ussher was, in later vernacular, a CRACKPOT, whose qualifications for determining the age of the Cosmos were on par with George W. Bush's qualifications for editing the Oxford English Dictionary.

"We also know God is eternal."

No, apparently only the misplaced belief in a god is eternal.

"So what was God doing before he created the universe? Was he floating around in the dark for billions upon countless billions of years? Doing what?"

It's abundantly clear that this god spends, and has spent, all his waking moments manufacturing evidence that HE DOESN'T EXIST. One need only add up all the passengers who've died in in the crashes of schoolbuses on their way to church picnics to know whose evidence carries more weight.

God tells us in His Word when He created the heaven and the earth. In the "beginning" when ever that was. To start with when we say billions of years, how do you know when a year started and ended since God didn't create the sun until the fourth day. With God there is no such thing as time, years, etc. He has always been. God is a Spirit. Genesis 1: 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. John 4: 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

First of all, some Christians such as myself are old-earth creationsists. There are biblical reasons for believing the Genesis creation "days" are indefinite periods of time which spanned billions of years. Secondly, we don't know what God "did" before the creation of the universe, but those of us who go to Heaven can ask Him when we get there. God does not "float around" in space, He is a Spirit who transcends time space and matter. www.reasons.org

First off, Moses only recorded back as far as creation, so we have no way of knowing.
That's one of those things that's really not important enough to our faith that we really need to know.
Also you have to understand that we are finite beings. Our brains can only understand and comprehend finite things. God is infinite. Therefore, it is impossible to fully comprehend God. God is eternal, meaning He always was and always will be... He is not constrained by time. He exists IN every time period all the way in an eterntiy forwards and backwards and up and down and all around... and this we cannot fully understand due to our finite brains.
Sorry I can't really help you... but I suppose we'll find out one day. Of course it may also be that when we are in heaven and we are actually in the very presence and fullness of God that we will be so overtaken by Him that we just won't care even more than now.

Any thing He wanted to. Seriously, do you think you'll get an answer that satisfies you? And, where did you come up with God creating the universe around 4000 BC? Young Creationists? I don't think so.

According to the new Quantum Theory creation of the universe (the big bang theory is dead you know) God would have been in his own universe in another membrane before he poked a finger into ours creating the influx of matter and energy (which I guess is the new version of "let there be light")

how do you know there was a "before" creation. If you know God is eternal but creation had a beginning then it seems to me that time started when creation happened and didnt exist before. by asking what was God doing before creation, you're assuming that time existed prior to God creating the universe.

God has other worlds and other creations. if we, as dumb humans, have active imaginations, what do you think God is capable of imagining up? And he doesnt have to just think about it, He can do it! I'm sure He was having all sorts of fun before us, and will continue to have all sorts of fun after us. He doesnt exist for us, but we exist cuz of Him (meaning His world doesnt revolve around us).

No one knows this answer except for God Himself. If you see Him in heaven one day be sure to ask Him.
