I have a 1998 Cool White New Beetle. It is appropriately named Casper. haha

It has 102k on the clock, and I just bought it in April when it had 97k.

Make sure the timing belt and water pump have been replaced (they have to be replaced together, so make sure you ask about both), as if the timing belt snaps (on any car), it can immobilize your engine.

And, don't listen to all these people saying it's a girl's car. It's NOT. I finally let my husband drive mine, and he's hooked!

It's got quite a bit of pickup if you need to get out of the way, handles corners like nothing you've seen, and gets great gas mileage (especially for a non-diesel).

So, yes, so far, I would say GO FOR IT. Just be sure to look up the blue book value online so you don't get gyped.

Also...there is an AWESOME, VW New Beetle only website out there, it is free, called http://www.newbeetle.org dedicated to the cars and the drivers of those cars.

You can ask them any question related to a New Beetle (even if the cost is too high or not to buy), and you'll get an answer. :)

if its a diesel manual you will be ok just keep up the maint. but if its any other engine or an auto stay away '98 did not have the diesel or 1.8 turbo it will be a 2.0. like a prevous person already stated that was the first year they had several issues. unless you work on it or have a real good mechanic friend that is willing to repair it for free and have a good cheap supply of vw parts i would pass on it stick with something newer and only by the manual transmission. volkswagen does not recommend a service interval for their automatic transmissions they say they are lifetime fill unless they are leaking or an internal repair is needed. that is the only time the fluid is added or replaced most generally resulting in fluid to break down most manufactures use dextron and have a service interval to follow not vw they just started getting back to servicing the fluid in the later model vehicles 05-06 depending on the trans that is in the vehicle.

No.
To buy a car with 117,000 miles on it is not smart in the first place.
But when you buy a used car of a car model in its first year...thats not good at all.
Look into a newer model year such as a 2001 or 2002....a model year that gave VW a chance to work out all the kinks. 1998 was the first year it was introduced so it was the year with the most problems.
And I would look for a car with considerably less mileage since 117,000 miles is a lot to begin with. It is good though if that is your only option.
Good luck.

i in my view comprehend a guy who drives a yellow beetle haha.... It does not make a guy look gay, in simple terms much less manly. basically whilst they are considered interior the automobile and strolling to/out of it nevertheless. particularly because of the fact it quite is this way of small automobile and greater females are linked with using it than adult males. (It grew to become into made properly-typical in some action picture the place a gaggle of teen females have been using around in a yellow convertible beetle.) Plus, adult males many times are not considered using yellow vehicles. till of direction you're in a Murcielago or Ferrari, etc.

They are neat I guess. Its a pretty good throwback of the old bettle bug. At least They stayed true to the design. 117k Is a lot of miles but for this day and time and the way things last its not all that many. Just dont pay to much.

that was the first year of the new beetle. there were alot of kinks to be worked out(including fires in the dash board). they did some recalls to work alot of these problems out. at 117,000 miles be ready to put some new parts on it here and there. the parts are typically more expensive than american cars. i would hold off on this purchase and buy one with lower miles when you have the $$$$$$

My uncle owns a cylinder head repair shop, and he says that he is getting in a lot of busted heads off of the new Beetles. I suggest you consider a different car, especially since this one has such high mileage.

Have you driven one? I don't think they're very comfortable. The dash is like three feet deep. I'd totally go for an old beetle, though!
