Kilz is a brand name, you can find it at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, just about anywhere. There are different shades of primers, but not like regular paint. White is always your best bet. Most times, it only takes one coat, sometimes two.
You can buy it in different sizes, too, depending on how large or small the surface to be painted.
Be sure to go around edges and corners with a brush, then use a roller for the main surface areas. It's also helpful to take off lightswitch plates and outlet covers before you start.

White is the most common primer color. The best primer is brand is Zinsser. I've seen "Kilz" before, I'm not sure if it's a brand or a type of primer that a certain brand makes. I think it is designed for covering mold and other gross stuff, like if you were going to paint a bathroom. Zinsser is by far your best bet. I've used the Home Depot brand and it sucked - big time! You've probably seen commercials for Zinsser - "The primer the professionals use". My stepdad has been a painter for 40+ years and it is all he uses.
Good luck painting!

primers come in diff colors, the people in the paint store can help you depending on what your final color is. It is worth it. I just paints from white to red and it took 5 coats and still not great. I should have primed gray first. Next time. Kilz is a cover for water spots, etc, the paint people can explain that too. I think it will work as a primer too for like going to white from red. good luck

Kilz is a brand name for a primer good at covering water stains, and other stains.
You can buy tinted primers, which will help paint cover in one coat. Just ask the sales person.
Did you know you can buy ceiling paint that goes on purple, and dries to the color you want? Really helps avoid missed spots ,(holidays).

Hi, I answered your original question, but I will answer this as well. I am a professional commercial painter, and I know how confusing the painting business can be. Anyone who can hold a paintbrush thinks they're a painter, and that's where the confusion comes in.
KILZ is made by BIN. They have a product called KILZ II as well. However, unless you know what type of paint you are going over (oil or latex) you will want to talk to someone first. I suggest you consult with a Sherwin Williams professional. Lowe's and Menards are NOT professionals.
Good luck.

Kilz is a brand name. I'd recommend a white primer, personally. It's the most common and easiest to find, and unless you take a sample of the light yellow you intend to use, you might get a primer that's too dark.

KILZ is ok but used to cover bad stains like grease or oil. Not necessary in most cases.
I'd stick to a white primer.

white primer is the easiest to use, i think. we just painted over dark green walls with white primer, and then painted the walls a light beige color, so they cover very well! We just used the cheap brand of primer from walmart, and we liked it better than any we have ever used before!

Paint is a system. Its good to stick to one manufacturer. But top-coating over primer???? Usually you would have to undercoat, depending on the system you are using. Primer is a base coat to enable the next coat to stick, that's why there are different primers for different types of material i.e. metal, wood, aluminium etc. You do get primer/ undercoats but I prefer the 3 coat system

Kilz is the best in my opinion, and I've applied thousands of gallons of paint. It comes in white,,, in latex or oil base.
