Tough, tough question. 1997 my wife went into a coma and was on life support. She had a living will and medical directives in place to NOT use extraordinary life support measures and to let her die. The doctors said they were using "standard" procedures and wouldn't pull the plug. She came out of the coma 3 months later minus both hands, both feet (they had to be amputated to stop the spread of gangrene), her kidneys shut down, and she had other medical problems. She lived another 2 years in constant pain and had to undergo 26 surgeries. I was with her through the end and she was glad to finally end her suffering. She wished the plug had been pulled right from the beginning.

i was in a coma for 7 weeks the drs. gave me 1 in 300 million chances of living.my brother said pull the plug my wife never gave up i may be in a wheelchair now and have some other med problems but i'm still living and my wife is still with me 3 yrs.later.

How can you even think about answering this question? If this person is in a coma, how long - have his doctors said there's no hope? Are you tryiing to collect a life insurance policy?
Go talk to your priest/preacher. Don't ask the GP on Yahoo!

Pull the plug. The chances of him waking up after more than three months are very small, but it does happen on occasion. You and your doctor should make the call together.

If the doctors are saying that it's permanent, that there's no chance of him waking up again, then let him go. Don't let someone live like Terri Shaivo had to for 14 years. If someone doesn't even know they're in the world, what's the point? They're not living, but merely existing...for the sake of those who can't let go.
