My friend is thinking about getting it done. does anyone know if kaiser (health insurance) covers it. I heard if your 100pds or more over weight they cover it. any ideas on how much it is. and is there any questions that we might not have thought about to ask. Does anyone actually know how long it takes until the weight starts comeing off.

I have had a couple friends that had it. Weight starts coming off right after surgery.

Depending on the Insurance company, the surgery usually would be approved if deemed that the weight problem is a life threatening situation. I have known 4 people who had the surgery. Two did okay, two did not. The two who did well lost their weight almost directly after the surgery. A definiate lifestye change is mandatory. I know Kaiser is big on the west coast and similar to an HMO. The initial visit would have to be with a primary care physician who would then refer you to a bariatric surgeon. However, bypass surgery isn't something to jump into.
Remember I said I had two friends who didn't fare well? One friend has been in and out of the hospital for about 1 year now. My friend has developed numerous infections and although she lost weight she hasn't lost what she needed to. My other friend almost didn't make it at all. 3 weeks after the surgery she developed a massive infection and wound up in the intensive care unit and then all other types of complications arose. She nearly died. Someone earlier mentioned to visit some good websites...I would suggest you do that first to get as much info to make an informed decision, then discuss the facts with your PCP to see if this is the only method of weight loss available. This is the last ditch effort if nothing else works.

My sister-in-law, my husband's sister, had gastric bypass surgery. She began struggling with her weight when she was a teenager. She tried many different diets, weight loss programs, and also had stomach stapling. She felt that gastric bypass surgery was her last resort. We asked her not to have it done since it is such a drastic step and no one in the family had a good feeling about her having the surgery. After the surgery, she developed an infection from a small perforation not detected after the surgery. 2 weeks later she was dead. My cousin knows a woman who had it done and lost 100 pounds and is doing well. Weight will begin to come off immediately since you are very restricted in your caloric intake. Sorry that I know nothing about insurance coverage. I encourage you to ask the surgeon about the mortality rate for this type of surgery.

my aunt had gastric bypass...she started losing weight immediately...i am not sure what kaiser health insurance is, so I can't help you there....make sure your friend goes to all the counseling that is offered...my aunt has had some problems and has not lost as much weight as she should have....you have to change your eating style, which is very hard for people who are overweight, because food is normally an addiction...my aunt continued eating what she wanted and not really "dieting"...she would get sick after eating and still lost weight...after a while she didn't get sick any longer, but I think her stomach stretched back out, which is very dangerous...she didn't watch what she ate and she didn't exercise...this is not an easy way out...people still have to work at making this work in order to lose all the weight they want...

I do know a few people who have had it, I don't know anything about Kaiser. What I've heard in 80 lbs overweight but I guess it might depend on the insurance people. My friend has lost 150 lbs but a casual aquaintence lost much more,

It's just like anything else, you have to follow the diet and exercise program they give you to make the most of it. It's not a miracle cure, you still have to work at it to make it worth the money and stress on your body.

Gastric Bypass Surgery/gastrectomy/lapband (all types of weight loss /bariatric surgery) is very cheap and safe in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges obesity surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as obesity surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your obesity surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin got her obesity surgery in India through the forerunners healthcare .SHe is more than very happy with the results. She has lost 65lbs in 5 months. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.I

the weight loss is immeadiate and scarey and ugly. My wife went thru hell for 2 years with puking and stomach aches and visits to the ER from passing out. Even now she cant eat most of the foods and drinks that she used to like. She lives on crackers and water. We can never go out to eat. DO NOT do it unless you are MORBIDLY obese and its for IMMEADAITE health problems. (not some maybe-problems because you are overweight). And DEFINETLY dont do it just for a diet.
