Every time my mother would leave the house, which wasn't often, my dad would make what we came to call Aunt Jamima Jell-O. It's simply strawberry Jell-O with fruit cocktail in it. If he was in a gourmet mood, he'd put in sliced bananas too. Woo Hoo!
It was very good. He always put in the can juices too which made it richer.
However, we kids acted like it was just CRAZY for him to be doing that "when Mom was gone". It's like he was going to get in trouble or something? We were goofy little kids. It's a funny thing. He can cook, but never did a lot of it. For some reason he just always went like a mad baffoon for that red Jell-O with fruit.
Why did we call him Aunt Jamima? I'm not really sure. Dad was pretty heavy and so was she? I'll never know how or why, but all of us kids have fond memories of that simple but yummy Aunt Jamima Jell-O.

Turtle,
When we were kids, my Dad burned the hot dogs and killed the fish.
When we became adults...ohmyGAWD!
He BBQ'd Thanksgiving dinner one year...awesome. All the meat and veggies were on the grill, with some creative sauce to go with everything.
He made a Rotisserie chicken that would embarrass Boston Market.
His ribs fall of the bone and into the delicious barbecue sauce.
He has turned into a creative, expressive and wonderful cook.

The only cooking dad did when I was a kid was bbq. It was very good. We always had a bbq for my birthday and it used to always rain so Dad would set up a canopy everytime before the big day. One time it caught on fire and one of my guests tried to blow it out..very funny at the time.

It was fine till mom came back home and saw the mess he left and she had a total fit started yelling how he burnt up the skillet. And I was kinda happy not to have to eat fried turnips for every meal after her return
