Griffith Park Observatory is cool and inexpensive....
You could watch a Nickelodeon show being taped, that would be fun.
There's also the La Brea tar pits for educational fun.
Be advised : You should keep the youngsters OUT of Hollywood after dark unless you want them asking you why that man is wearing a dress and getting into cars with strangers. LOL.

I agree about Universal Studios. Your boys will have lots of fun there. After that you can go to City Walk, an outdoor mall leading to the entrance of Universal Studios.

There's also the El Capitan Theater. Right now I think they're showing Pirates of the Carribean. They usually have some activities there related to the feature movie. It's also near the Kodak theater, where the Oscars are held.

There's Univeral Studios & the Arclite Cinema Dome Theatre. Other than that, Hollywood itself is really not very kid-friendly.

there are so many things. i believe Griffith observatory is closed for remodeling right now, but you can go up to the park, an amazing view of LA. you have to take them to the tar pits, great place!
