Caffeine in cola drinks comes from the cocoa beans that are used to make colas.(Coke, Pepsi RC, Dr Pepper etc). There is also added caffeine to those drinks.

In the case of Mountain Dew, caffeine is an added ingredient during the batching/mixing process.

Can you get caffeine out of soda? Yes and No.

(YES)The only way you could do that is to never add the ingredient cocoa bean extract. But then it would not taste like a cola. It would taste like Sprite or 7UP.

(NO) because if the soda has cocoa bean as an ingredient, the caffeine will naturally occur. When a soft drink says "caffeine free", it actually means there is "no ADDED caffeine", only the very, very small amount that naturally occurs from cocoa beans. The amount of naturally occuring caffeine in cocoa beans falls far, far below what the FDA considers relevant.

if you look on most soda cans they list caffeine as a separate ingredient. i wonder if caffeine actually has a flavor. if so, is it to make the soda taste good or is it just to keep you hooked.

do a personal taste test. drink a regular and a caffeine-free.
if there's no difference, go for the free and leave the "chems" alone. if you do notice a difference, question whether it's a matter of taste or missing that caffeine high.
