A muscle car is an intermediate auto (Pontiac Le mans. Chevrolet Chevelle, Dodge Coronet, Mercury Comet) with a large displacement engine from a larger luxury model. Bonneville engine into Le Mans = GTO, Impala engine into Chevelle= SS. Coronet = Super Bee, Comet = Cyclone, Etc. The smaller cars (Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, Etc) are referred to as "Pony cars". That is because the Mustang was the first of this type of car and the name just stuck.
