Easy answer: ignore whatever your peers might think or say, and drive what you like. It's *your* car, after all. You're not buying it for *them.*

Or, if image concerns dictate that you must drive an American-branded vehicle, the domestic automakers do build some excellent sport-compacts these days. I've driven Chevrolet's Cobalt SS Supercharged, Saturn's ION Red Line, and Dodge's discontinued SRT-4, and all three are an absolute blast to drive. If your tastes run towards nimble, precise handling, you'll like the GM vehicles better (I do, personally). If you're more into straight-line speed, you may prefer the Dodge.

If those are too expensive, try Ford's SVT Focus from a few years back. It's considerably slower than the above vehicles, as it's naturally-aspirated (the GMs are supercharged, the Dodge, turbocharged). But while it won't beat 5.0-liter Mustangs in a straight line, as the Cobalt, Red Line, and SRT-4 will, it'll still outhandle them by a wide margin.

Anyway, the terms "import" and "domestic" really don't mean as much as they used to. All automakers are now global corporations competing in every market in the world. Japanese manufacturers build some cars in the States, US manufacturers build some cars overseas or in Mexico. Do a little Internet searching on the dynamics of today's auto industry, and you'll see that such labels are really not worth getting hung up on.

Well when I was a young fellow we did not have "tuner" cars, we had "muscle" cars that we tuned, and of course you still do. If you are really averse to buying a rice rocket, and understand, I have nothing against rice rockets, you can get yourself a Mustang or a Camaro or the like and the number of speed parts available for turning either of those into an asphault eating road demon are enormous. Then you can tune to your heart's content and not be fearful of overstraining a small displacement four cylinder whose sheer lack of mass limits its ability to dissapate heat--the ultimate enemy of all high performance engines.

That said, I too marvel at the things that some of these fellows have been able to do with these very small engines, and I do not mean to disparage their acheivements in any way. Still, the idea of a 500 hp Mustang has a certain visceral appeal.

You could try a Ford Focus Hatchback or a Chevy Cobalt. Those are considered tuner cars and yet if your seen driving one by your hick friends they won't scream at you and throw rice at you.
Good luck!

You want domestic? Then get yourself an old school ride like a Ford Pinto,Chevy Vega,Pontiac Astre,Mercury Bobcat,Chevy Monza, just to name a few.All of them came with 4 cylinders and could be tuned to your taste! Honda,Nissan(which was Datsun back in the day),and Toyota were just the names of cars that were from Japan didn't really mean much back then.

Many so called American cars are manufactured out of the country and/or a large number of the major components are from off shore. Also many so called foreign cars are manufactured in America. Face it dude, we live in a global environment. By the way if you hate all things imported what do you put in your gas tank?
