How can I do SQL or SQL-like queries with text files on Windows?

I don't want to use Access or MS SQL Server or any database engine like that. I'm just looking for a way to do queries directly on the text files (like the Unix join command).

That is an excellent question. Are you looking to act on the text files or their contents? For I believe that join is actually operating on the files, even though it's joining "fields".

You may try tbl, groff, troff, etc.

Assuming that the files have fields that are fixed length or delimted, then I think that getting windows ports of "awk" and "sed" will be invaluable.
