There are a number of good products out there to remove cat urine odor. We used a product called "OUT." It came in a spray bottle, was sold at Walmart, and it took care of the odor after we sprayed it on the area and left it overnight. Never had the odor again. Great stuff!!

Good Luck!!

You may be able to use a product called PetZyme available at Petsmart. I tried Urine Gone with little results. We recently discovered this product and were pleased with the results. (However, the instructions call for allowing the product ten minutes to thoroughly saturate the floor - I left it about four hours.) One thing: I don't know how this product would work with wood floors. It says "Ideal for use on carpets, upholstery, pet beds, clothing, and other surfaces." It doesn't specifically mention wood, and I'm not sure what this will do to the finish. Of course, technically, the floor is ruined anyway, so I don't think you have much choice than to risk ruining the finish. You'll need a blacklight to find the exact locations of the urine. Petsmart sells one called a stinkfinder. Walmart has a blacklight that is larger and less expensive. What you might have to do is this; Once you locate the odor, if the product doesn't work on wood, then you may need to call a carpenter (seriously) to come in and remove the hardwood and subflooring that has been soaked with cat urine. You have no way of knowing how long that's been there...or how long the cat was allowed to urinate in the room. Sometimes there's only one way to get rid of that smell...and that's ripping out everything that has been in contact. I hope it doesn't come to those extremes, but if it does, remember the blacklight trick. That may keep you from having to redo the entire floor, and save you some money! Good luck! We have five cats, so you have our sympathies!

If you have a Sam's Club nearby, they sell a product called Odo-Ban that is very effective; I spray a 50/50 mixture of it & water into the bottom of the kitty litter box everytime I change the litter.

I also use it to clean up after the dog when she piddles. It is also very effective in the wash; pour 3-4 ounces of it into the rinse cycle in lieu of Downy.

In this particular instance, I would soak the some into the stain full strength, and see if that does the trick. It may stain the floor further, but if it doesn't work you will need to sand & refinish the floor, or even pull it up entirely and lay down something new.

And if you do that, I would suggest replacing the sub-floor also; it is probably smelly as well...

That's a nightmare. We've just had that problem ourselves. The problem isn't so much the urine that's on the wood, but the urine that has dropped through the gaps. Either way, the thing to do is to get a product called who knows what (we did this in the UK), but it is cheically formulated to neutralize cat urine odour. Spray that on generously and let it drip down the gaps of the boards much like the original urine would have done; hopefully, that'll take care of it. Otherwise, try mixing baking soda and water, and use it as described.

I don't know if this will work on hardwood floors, but white vinegar gets it out of clothing and such that you can wash in the washing machine. It neutralizes it somehow. You would think it would smell even worse, but it works. Like I said, I don't know about the floor, but if nothing else works - it's worth a shot. Good luck.

Good Luck! We had the same problem...had to rent an industrial sander and re sand all the floors; also re stain/varnish; the dust gets everywhere, but was worth it! They also have this stuff, Urine Be Gone that you let sit on the floors for a while and wipe up, but what a pain! depending on how much flooring, you may just want to pull up the planks that are stained and replace them...
