I adopted a cat in April. Never had a cat before and it is lots of fun. You should consider getting a scratching post, if your cat is not declawed (mine isn´t and it is fine) For the beginning a small one is enough. Get the cat also some toys. They love catnip. That is an herb and you can buy it as a spray. They go nuts. Some toys are already treated with catnip.
Than you should see a vet and get all the shots. But maybe that is already taken care of.
Have fun with the cat.

Congratulations!!! That's so sweet of you to give a kitten a home.
Other things you might need are:
a scoop, so you can take the poop out of the litter daily.
Toys- water bottle caps and the plastic thing-a-ma-bobs that you take off when you open a gallon of milk work, too.
Nail clippers- they don't like it, but it's better for your furniture and skin.
Advantage (or other flea meds, especially in summer).
Cat shampoo (be sure to clip nails the day before a bath...bathe about once every two to four weeks, dependiing on smell).
Scissors- if your cat has lots of hair, trim the area by its pooper so the poop doesn't get caught.
My own suggetstion for litter is Swheat Scoop- it's all natural and doesn't have chemicals that are harmful to kitties, humans or the environment, and has a pleasant, nutty aroma.

First of all congratulations! Do you have a name for it yet. Well your cat will need a scratching post, so it won't ruin your furniture. It'll need at least one stuffed animal not to big if it's a kitten, so he can play and sleep with it. You also have to decide where you want him to sleep. If you don't want him in your bed maybe you could get him a bed maybe one that looks somewhat like a cave, they love to hide, it makes them feel safe. Definitely something with catnip to play with maybe in a shape of a fish or bird. Oh and if it's your first cat and it's a kitten your should wrap a battery operated clock with a towel and put it in his bed, so he can believe that his with his Mom or brothers. Enjoy your cat, they are a lot of fun and very curious. Give him a ball of yarn, or a soft ball or just move something from side to side and you'll see how much your cat will entertain you. Quick suggestion don't be aggressive with him when he does something wrong because then they turn aggressive. If he does something wrong try to catch him in the act, and without him noticing use a spray bottle with water to scare him from doing it again. Remember he is an animal and might take him a while to understand , just be constant.

Congrats on cat adoption!!!
stainless steel bowls are the most hygenic and dont need replacing (plastic will need replacing every 6 - 10 months for health reasons)
non-scented clumping litter is the one cats prefer most
food - any you buy from grocery store or wal mart is low qualty (lots of filler - especially avoid dangerous chemicals like BHA and BHT) dont get one with fish because fish has calcium which contributes to urinary tract health problems - (NO MILK EVER) Chicken or Lamb and Rice is best for kitties
toys - you need a wide variety of toys (at least 6-10) have only 3 or so out at a time and the others hidden away and change them around every week or two since kitties prefer to play with toys they have not seen for a while - you will want a variety of balls - hard, jingle, soft, cat nip filled... honeysuckly toys, mouse toys etc...
a scratching tower or post is great but again if they loose interest try something different like moving it or laying it on its side to encourage interest -
cat nip (only if she is over 4 months)
nail trimmers (please dont declaw- if she is bad you can get SOFT PAWS nail protectors) -
slicker brush - long hair or short hair - they all need brushing
hard treats only as soft are bad for their teeth - Tender Vittles food is crap and so is any semi moist food -
she needs dry food and water all the time - canned food is only a luxury - but if you chose to give canned food dont follow the instructions - they dont need that much- a teaspoon a day is plenty and if you add 2 teaspoons of water to that it will help her with urinary tract health - best to give at night or she will be waking you up earlier and earlier to get canned food

Lots of toys if he/she is a kitten. A nice bed or soft blanket too. Some cat's prefer scratching posts to plain cardboard for a scratch. Some catnip would be a nice treat too! Or wet food if the cats' basic diet is dry food. If you like plants then you could go to the library and find more ideas and also other plants you can plant that your cat can nibble on.And of course lots o' love =) Hope it helped!Enjoy your new pet!

Get litter box liners, that makes it easier to clean up.
Take some newspaper, put it flat in the bottom of the box, then sprinkle on top of that plain baking soda, then on top of that put the liner to cover the box, then pour in the kitty litter.
I layer it like this to keep the smell from soaking through. Remember to clean that box twice a day.
Next, you want to get some toys for the kitty, cats love balls with bells in them, or get some catnip mice, that will chill kitty out when they get too hyper.
Cat snacks are good too. Maybe a cat "tree" it's a carpet covered tower. They love to climb them.

Lots of toys a scratching post and some free time to play with your lucky new pet. You can buy it lots of cool stuff like a pet bed, but it may not use them. Half the fun of having a pet is buying it all the useless cute items in the pet store.

Get some catnip toys, a few small rubber balls, a cat scratching post, a good cat brush to use for grooming it, a cat carrying case, maybe even a cat bed(thought they tend to sleep where they want anyway) and it's own food and water dishes!

How about some toys, a brush or comb and maybe a little bed for it. My cat loves to be brushed, and it helps cut down on fur balls. He also has his own "dog" bed that he sleeps in. Most cats love a bit of cat nip every now and then too. Any pet store will sell bags of it.
