I'm invited to an occasion where the dress code is "business casual". What exactly should I wear? I feel like this is silly to ask, but business and casual seem like a contradiction to me.

I received soem good advice on this one, and it has not done me wrong.

Business casual should be taken to mean "dress as formal as possible without formal attire." It should also mean dress conservatively casual.

Example:

JACKET: Yes
TIE: Never
SHIRT: Collared, coservative, button down
Pants: Slacks, good material
Dress: conservative
SHOES: Leather, not lace up
SOCKS: Absolutely

Business casual means you don't have to wear a suit or even a cocktail dress. Like a pair of dress pants or a skirt with a nice shirt would be fine.

Well, NO BLUE JEANS! And no sneakers.

Usually something that is kind of dressed up, but less formal than a business suit.

Less than a suit, more than golf attire. Make sense?

If not, just go with the following:
Guy--blue shirt, red tie, khakis.
Girl--Nice, earth-toned blouse and matching skirt.

maybe a nice denim dress, nice pants and blouse. I think the point is to look nice but be comfortable.

At my firm, it means khaki pants (Dockers, for example) and a polo shirt or blouse with a collar.

for a women it would be basically any type of office attire other than a suit...for a guy it would be a pair of slacks and a polo shirt but not a shirt and tie....
