OK I know that training is a major play here...

But I am trying to decide on a breed that is quick, smart and generally fun to be around. I have big.. ok HUGE dogs but they love smaller dogs. I am looking to compete in AKC agility... Any ideas????

The dogs that can win the top agility competitions like Border Collies, Jack Russell Terriers and the like can be VERY difficult to live with. They are high energy dogs that need an experience trainer and tons of daily exercise.

Start by watching agility trials in person and talk to the people there about their dogs. Or join an agility club - there's plenty of info at the AKC site.

Almost any dog can compete and enjoy agility, so get a breed that best fits your lifestyle and the amount of time you have to spend with him. An Australian Shepherd would probably be a very good choice.

Make sure you pick a breeder with agility experience. Your dog will need to be very physically sound, so get the best pup you can! Find a good breeder referral by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows.

You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money that someone else couldn't handle.

I just went to a dog show with agility not too long ago and the best agility dog I saw were shelties hands down. That or some terriers are really fast and good at it.

I'm not sure how they are in agility specifically, but we have a Boston terrier who is brilliant! She's quick, she's playful and loving, loves other dogs, and learns really fast. Again, no experience in competing with the breed, but they are a lot of fun :)

I have a Chinese Crested I do agility with. They are smart, fast, and IMO unbelievably cute in the ring. I am not a little dog person, but I really like the Cresteds.

There are many things you can do with your pup to prepare him for competition, before you even start a class.

Shelties make excellent agility dogs. If you are wanting a toy breed, Papillons seem to be decent as they are high enough energy for the sport.

Border collies, border terriers, shelties, jack russells...

Personally love Border Terriers when it comes to small breeds...

sheltie, border terrier (these little guys also have great attitudes, especially if he will need to keep up with BIG dogs), or a brittany.
