The only tip is PRACTISE. Practise and practise over on this language is useful. You could hear the Chinese on a Chinese speaking drama, a Chinese movie. Make friend with a Chinese is good for practise too.

Remember you are never late or difficult learning a new thing. Just make sure you work hard on it and practise over it. Like school boy studying hard at their school.

Of course you have to cover interesting in it once you want to start and keep it on.

I do not speak chinese nor do I know how hard it would be to learn. However, I read an article a few weeks ago about a website called WWW.LINESE.COM.

This is a website sponsored by the Chinese Government to help people learn Chinese in advance fo the the 2008 Summer Olympics. It might be a good place to start.

Also, I understand that the BBC (British Broadcastin System) has very helpful lessons on their website to learn foreign languages

Good luck.

好运

(I think these are the symbols for "good luck" in Chinese.)

Learning the characters is difficult until they become familiar, which takes a while.
Also, Chinese is a tonal language, which means that the word "ching" can be said five different ways, and have at least that many meanings. If you use the wrong tone, people don't understand which word you are saying.
On the bright side, the grammar structure is pretty simple, and there are no verb tenses to remember, which makes it much easier than European languages.
Learn it, it's fun.

The grammar is very easy, but when it comes to writing and reading, it is very hard, because they have more than 10000 characters from which they use about 5000 for everyday things.
It is so hard that an ordinary Chinese person cannot read the newspapers until he reaches the age of 16. The pronunciation is also very difficult since one word can mean many different things depending on how it is pronounced.

good luck.
