This is a pathetic question in the 21st century, but I have next to no idea about what a role playing game is. I asked both of my brothers but I didn't get their explanations really well. So what is it?

Its done in yahoo chat. You pretend to be someone else, and it gets into kinky sexual stuff.

role playing is playing a made-up character. One example of role-playing is the type of thing done on the internet in forums. You make up a character (personality and looks) and you write in story form as if you were the character. Here is something I wrote in an rpg once:

Nightshade growled and then jumped at a Watership rabbit. "Hraka!
What do you want!? We will never, ever back down!" She scratched and
clawed at the rabbit. The young doe had gotten a lot of practice from
fighting Thlayzorn. She tried to grab for the neck and scratch at
it's eyes.

Eyebright looked saddly at her small friend. She felt bad that he
couldn't fight... Tears came to her eyes, but she blinked them away.
Why did they have to fight? Why did they all have to fight... and
kill the ones she loved?

It is all done story style. Often, it is based on a book but people create characters that are not from the book. The message above is from a Yahoo! RPG where we role played evil rabbits that came out at night. The rabbits acted somewhat like the rabbits in the book "Watership Down".

It is really fun if you love writing and you never know exactly what will happen. We had rabbits fighting, romance, death, kits causing trouble, etc...

Or there is another kind of role playing where you role play in like a video game setting. You play a character on a video game, sometimes being able to pick certain characteristics they have.

Here is a role play group I've played on for many years:

As an example, lets say you're trying to break up with a boyfriend but don't know what to say... You grab one of your friends and go over it with them and they "act" like they're the boyfriend. That's one type of role-playing. If you're referring to something more "bedroom" related, role-playing can be you and your partner pretending to be a Doctor and a Nurse (or any other thing that comes to mind) and you act out those roles while doing your thing...

There are typically two types of role-playing. One is the role playing in sci-fi or fantasy games, where people take on "roles" to play the game. The other type of role-playing that we typically hear about is role-playing during sex when partners dress up in "roles" for fun. Ther are certainly other types of role playing, but these are the most common.

A role playing game is usually a game where you are a knight, or a wizard, or an evil orc. You going around fighting monsters earning "expierence points" to gain levels. You can find treasure and maybe even save the princess at the end of the game.

You choose a character from a certain past tv show or movie, which the game has somethin to do with. You act as you're that character, for the duration of the game. Some such games have dice and cards, by the way.

It's acting for stupid people who have no lives. Like, some random people pretend they are the brothers and sisters on 'The Brady Bunch' or something.

For example, you pretend to be your ma and do all her functions. The idea is you want to experience what is like to be in someone else's shoes.
