You need to approach them as if they were deer, that is, slowly and gently. Sudden moves or loud voices will startle them into flight. Walk towards one, let her see you coming, say hi or hello or whatever, smile, and keep walking. After a while, catch her eye and smile again. If, and only if, she smiles back, approach her and introduce yourself. When she introduces herself, say something, anything, about her name. This shows that you listened to what she said: a big plus. Remember, softly, softly, is the key here.

R E L A X...if she's in a class with you that's something in common, ask her about class, the test, if she spits or swallows, etc.
Try to be a friend, and the rest comes easier.
