I'm not sure, I think it is they know how to purrr...I've never met a cat that didn't know how to purr.

Cats don't choose to purr any more than we choose to sneeze or hiccup. It's not the same type of reaction, but it is a nerve thing. Some people believe that it is an emotional thing - and not always a sign of content, as cats often purr when they are traumatized or sick as well.

I'm not sure if you are interested in more scientific information, but check out this page: http://cats.about.com/cs/catmanagement101/a/why_cats_purr.htm which can explain it better.

They are born with the ability. They will purr when with their mommy to let her know that they are okay and happy. That is why they purr when they are with their owners and they are satisfied or happy. Researchers arent exactly sure how or why they do it, but they are pretty sure it is just done to demonstrate contentment.

Both. They are born knowing how to purr, but as they grow, they develop the ability to do it on command, and as a form of communication.

They have to learn how. Becuase I have a cat that unfortunately while it was growing up, some bad things happened to it. Now today all it does is grunt and growl. Evan when I'm peting it that's all it does. The behavior is definitely learned.

Kittens are born knowing how to purr. I raised persians and would have newborn babies purring when they started nursing. It is a natural reflex for them.

Yeah, they go to school to learn how to do it. When they graduate they get little kitty diplomas.
