You could try practicing opening your mouth wider every morning.
align your hand sideways so that your index finger is facing up and your pinky is at the bottom. See how many fingers you can fit in your mouth.
Try gradually adding fingers each morning. :)
The rubber thing helps alot, without it your jaw would be very tired.

ok, well for next time, book a massage with a registered massage therapist before your dentist appointment.. tell the massage therapist you want a TMJ treatment, where they will treat the massetter (the muscle on the side of the jaw) and other associated jaw muscles so that your jaw will be able to stay open better during your dental treatment....
Also, as for right now, i would also considering visiting a massage therapist, because your jaw may be out of alignment due to the rough jaw clamp the dentist had in your mouth for probably half an hour.. and a massage therapist could relieve this pain..
A TMJ treatment from a massage therapist involves working the massetter from the outside, and from the inside of the moutn (the therapist should ALWAYS wear a rubber glove for internal work) the massage therapist should also work the muscle under the tongue from the inside and the outside. they may also find it beneficial to work the neck muscles (scm and scalenes) to get the most benefit!!!
i strongly suggest getting a massage!!! it's a life saver for tmj sufferers!!!

Your jaw keeps closing partly due to you breathing through your mouth. Try breathing through your nose only next time and that shuold lessen the closing part.
As for the pain, it will always hurt when yuo leave yuor mouth open for that long!! Why wouldnt it hurt!
Anyways. Just leave it open and breath thruogh your nose (both exhaling and inhaling it will be tought, but you have to calm urself down) HTat will help and if yuo ahve to just bit the rubber thing if that helps -_-; but not much u can do ~

It happens to all of us sometimes. I found that relaxing and when they need the mouth open farther than is natural it is easiest to push the lower jaw slightly forward. it makes a little more room, but don't do it for too long or you might be a little sore from stretching the connective tissue.

Some dentist drills make you feel "weird" . it's the vibrations in your skull that made you feel this way. Its normal. most people react to it that way.
