The jelly has a chance to seep in with the bread and mixes better with the peanut butter

Because the jelly is softer, the peanut butter will not spread easily requiring you to clump enormous amounts of the peanut butter on top of the jelly. This results in a perfectly proportioned sandwich. Although, it could get a little messy.

If you toast the bread like I do, I put the jelly on first so that the toast has a chance to cool off before putting the peanut butter on it and then the peanut butter doesn't melt as quickly.
I find that it tastes better to me that way.

Because the jelly soaks into the first piece of bread more. If you put on the peanut butter first, it will prevent most of that jelly from soaking in.

Ok, I don't know how you guys make pb&j sandwiches, but it sure sounds gross!! If you put the jelly on one piece of bread, then peanut butter on the other piece of bread, each spreads nicely and makes a well-proportioned sandwich. I don't even want to think how much of a mess trying to put both on the same piece of bread would be...blick!

the best PBJ sandwiches are dipped in french toast batter(egg, milk and vanilla) then grilled.
