Yes, it's real. I've held it AND read it.

There is no smoke without fire. Quite a few things mentioned, some of the theories mentioned in the Da Vinci Code have been around for a long while.

However, I personally think that Mr Brown simply threw in some facts, quite a few theories, some filler, stirred it all in a pot, and out came the 'Da Vinci Code'.

The theory that Jesus had a relationship with Mary Magdelene is not new.

Some people think that the fact that little is heard of Jesus when he was young to say he was in India. There has been some research that Jesus was a teacher there. If you can get your hands on it, take a look at:The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ by Nicolas Notovitch.

However, at that time, the caste system was very prevalent and Jesus preached to all (irrespective of caste), and he was forced to go back to the Middle East.

This also explains why many of the people even say he went back to India after his 'resurection' to live until his old age. There is a tomb in Kashmir that mainly Muslims go to, and it is supposed to be the tomb of Jesus. Remember, Muslims also believe in Jesus, just that his importance to their religion is lower than that for Christians. He was known as Issa.

Personally, I have no idea whether that is true, and until I go there and do my own research I can't tell.

However, my personal thoughts are that we need to remember that the Bible is afterall a human construct. There is more than one version of the same story, some stuff can be slightly contradictory. Furthermore, with the emergence of the 'Gospel of Judas', more has been revealed about the choosing of versions that now make up the Bible.

My position is that Jesus was an important figure, and that the actual religion people belong to does not matter as much as how they lead their lives since most religions teach us the same things. We should focus on similarities rather than on differences.

The Da Vinci Code however, is a disappointment in terms of how much filler it uses and it's non-development of many ideas, but it can start the thought process in many people.

I wish people would learn about what they're talking about before they go running their mouths:

The history behind The Da Vinci Code book is about 40% fact, 50% legend-theory-assumption, and 10% pure BS. I say the book because the movie was quite a bit more fair in specifying what was true and what was assumption.

Yes, there is evidence of Jesus having a relationship w/ Mary..but it's WEAK.

Yes, Constantine did help shape the church...but he did not completely invent Christianity as the book implies

There is NO evidence I know of other than an old French legend that says Jesus had a child...and that legend is merely "Mary came to France with a child named Sara" Sarah, in Hebrew meant "Princess"...so she was the daughter of the "King" Jesus? Its a bit of a stretch.

So, little in the book is completely false...but they are making quite a few assumptions, some of which are based on little to no evidence.

For the answer to your question I would invite you (and anyone else who would care to learn something) to visit the author's web site: www.danbrown.com. It explains what is and what is not fact within the story.

Dan Brown is well respected author; he has never claimed 'The Da Vinci Code' was anything but a fictitious story.

Enjoy?

It's real in the sense that someone made it up - so it exists - and that is as far as it goes. There is very little fact and a lot of nonsense in the code. It can not be substantiated unlike the Bible. It's made a lot of money for a few people. As entertainment, no doubt it's fulfilled its purpose. The short answer to you question is no or perhaps you should ask is it true -then the answer is simple - no!

Hi there...'tottie-for-lol' here. The 'Devinci code' is DEFINITELY NOT TRUE!! It is JUST A STORY...nothing else!!
I know that, at one time, people did not have Freedom of Speech, like they do to-day. Even your nursery-rhymes were coded messages, because of this. Nostrademus the prophet, had to write his predictions in a form of code. Funnily-enough...most of what he predicted has come as near to being true, as one can get. (You should read his book... it is both interesting and very uncanny!). But the de-vinci code is far from the truth.
Even the Church has condemned it... and so they should. It is verging onto blasphemy [ in my opinion, at least.. that is].
Just another attempt at belittling the Roman Catholic faith....
AGAIN!!!!

So, I say.. just accept that it IS only a story!!!

The fictional story is not real. Much of the history contained in it IS REAL, as are the arts and locations. Its just that Christians find it easier to ignore the real history and claim the entire book is fiction, that way their beleifs cannot be questioned...

It could be. There is no proof of anything, for or against, so who knows?

I just don't know why people can't accept it as a story. I mean, remember how Indiana Jones was centered around the Ark of the Covenant, and the Holy Grail??? I believe in none of that, but it's still one of my favorite movies.

The book itself? No. Certain parts that it hints at are to an extent. It's too much information to get into here, but recently scrolls have been found which point to the fact that Jesus may have faked his own demise. How much is b.s. and how much is truth is still being sorted out.

Yes, it is. If you're referring to the work of fiction by author Dan Brown.

The ideas in the book, however, are still fiction.

no. when the author of the book first wrote it he said that it was fiction. but since it became a big hit and was made into a movie, the author claimed it was real just to hype things up. its all a bunch of bull
