Some people believe that this country was built by people of all faiths, not just Christians. And that even though many of the 'founding fathers' were Christians, they realized (having been persecuted in England) that religious freedom was far superior to instituting a Christian-only government that was no better than what they left. So perhaps what you missed was not a change in faith in America, but all the faiths that where there before!

Don't despair... only about 13% of the population is rational... the rest are right there with you, believing in the myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions of an ignorant bunch of Bronze Age fishermen and wandering goat herders.
Actually, if you were told that this country was built on Christian values, you were sadly misinformed... or lied to. This country was built on secular humanist values that emerged from 'The Age of Enlightenment', in France. (You might want to look that up in Google.) the Founding Fathers were, for the most part, diests and agnostics... not Chrisitans.
Right now, the USA is in serious danger of being turned into a theocracy. Christian 'Dominionists' have largely usurped the local level political apparatus of the Republican Party, and are engaged in a sub rosa process to politically motivate moderate Christians under the false cover of religious issues such as morality and family values. The goal is nothing less than the takeover of all elective offices in the USA.
Their doctrine comes from the Bible, starting with the term 'dominion' at Genesis 1:28... “And God said unto them, [Adam and Eve] Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have DOMINION… over every living thing.” They interpret DOMINION as: “... a supremacy in determining and directing the actions of others or in governing politically, socially, or personally.”
They want to remake the USA as a theocracy... and they are succeeding.
Wake up. Take a stand. Do something... for we are sowing the seeds of our own destruction, while these religious nut-jobs are awaiting God's demolition job.

First - on what basis do you claim that "the country is suppose to be built on Christianity"?
If that is so, why did the Founding Fathers draft and ratify the First Amendment?
And do you know the percentage of people in the world - not just in the U.S. - who are atheist or agnostic? Pales in comparison to the percentage that are Christian, which is what about 80% of U.S. citizens claim to be.
I haven't noticed a dramatic rise in atheism or agnosticism in the last three years - the time that the Iraq war has been going on. However, I have noticed a significant rise in the voice of the religious right (right as opposed to left, not right as opposed to wrong).
Thanks for serving our country. I am glad that you were helping to establish a new democracy that will help spread freedom.
"Free - the new in thing to be." That's catchy, dontcha think?

People are atheist or agnostic because they don't need fairy tales to explain the world. They know that since the beginning of time, every civilization has used make-believe stories to explain that which is unexplainable. Atheists are realists---they know that to say "we're going to heaven and you're going to hell" is egotistical, ignorant, and simplistic. Atheists know that there is no way that Christianity is "the one true way" because it's only been around for a couple thousand years. In the Christian view, apparently, anyone who lived more than a couple thousand years ago went to hell.

No, this country is built on freedom, including religious freedom and with that the freedom not to be religious. Many of the leaders may have been Christian, but that does not mean the country was built on their faith,

This country was founded by force, by men who raped and pillaged to get what they wanted... it just so happens that they were Christians. I am not an Agnostic, nor a Christian, but I do believe that people are educating themselves and not operating blindly by faith.

They read books. Besides the bible
Country was founded by many religions. A few atheists too. We have had atheist presidents too.
By the way, the bill of rights in no way resembles the ten commandments.

Many people are agnostic or atheist because believing in THE SUPREME BEING requires a higher intelligent functioning, and the two groups of individuals you refer to above, are lacking in both. And, please let me tell you, this is STILL A CHRISTIAN NATION, ONE NATION UNDER GOD!! We just need to make our beliefs better known. My son is in Iraq as we speak, due home at the end of October I believe, and it's great to hear from one of my son's "Brothers-in-Arms"!! God, as in Jesus our Christ, Bless you.

It's because they read books by Howard Zinn who tries to act like he knows everything about History and God when he's really only citing his own (crap) theories.
And because they listen to Darwin followers, who, as we all know, believe in the science of evolution which leaves no room for God in this world.
And it's partly because of Modern Culture. It's a, "If the celebrities do it, we should too" kind of issue.
I hope that helped.

I'm with you, brother! The Devil's been hard at work! But fear not! Justice is at hand!
(Mark 9:43) Jesus said, "And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched."
So too will Christian America eventually 'cut off' all the damned atheists! Probably with a bullet to the brain! Hallelujah!
