I fell in LOVE with a miniature Yorkie while on vacation on Brazil and I want to bring him back on the plane with me to the US. I know that he will need shots etc, but are there other requirements for bringing dogs into the US? Has anyone else done this?

I'm not too sure about bringing one in, but i know taking one to a different country takes forever! I would imagine it would be about the same. There are all kinds of test and labs to be done, many which take weeks to months. There are also quarantines that must be months long when they get here. Unless you can pay for all of that(its expensive) I would try to find one here in the states, especially from a shelter, to give a loving home.

if you are getting the puppy from a breeder in brazil who shows their dogs, the puppy will most likely already have the necessary shots. it would be the breeder's responsibility to provide the proper paperwork to verify immunizations for the pup to travel to the u.s. also, you will probably have to pay sales tax when you get to the u.s.

i know dogs that travel back and forth from south america and europe to the u.s. with their owners going on business or for dog shows. there is NO quarantine in the u.s. except for hawaii.
i received four dogs shipped direct from germany to pennsylvania. their paperwork was taped to the crates. we opened their crates, let them exercise for a while, then loaded them into the van and drove home. it took about 30 to 45 minutes. i've also traveled to dog shows in canada where you have to have your rabies & DHLP/P records to cross the border.

go to www.ask.com and do a search for your specific questions. but as i said, the breeder is responsible for keeping the records for immunizations, pedigree, etc. ask them for that information. if they don't have it don't buy the puppy!

you absolutely MUST have vaccination records to transport a dog between countries..
