There have been at least three African popes:
• St. Victor I was Bishop of Rome (189-199)
• St. Melchiades was Bishop of Rome (311-314)
• St. Gelasius was Bishop of Rome (492-496), liturgical reformer, who ordered the reception of Communion under both species.
With love in Christ.

Pope Victor I, Pope Miltiades and Pope Gelasius I were from Africa. Since the papa of the Church of Rome's primary role is as bishop of Rome and patriarch of the West, generally most bishops have been Italians if not Romans. Occaisionally a Pope is selected from another patriarchate, but it is uncommon. It almost occured in the '60's when an Eastern rite bishop almost was elected Pope.

There are plenty of Archbishops that are not caucasian. Race has nothing to do with who gets elected Cardinal or Pope.

Yes, several of the early Popes were from Africa, and most likely black. Heck- even Peter was a man of color...he was from the middle east!
