It's a big comfort. Once someone can think for themselves, the mind can wander into scary areas. It's always nice to believe that a god is looking over you, that you have some purpose in life, and that something awaits you after the biggest jump into the unknown (death for those who didn't understand that).

And I also highly contest the statement people make about 'having to believe in something,' usually implying that said something must be external. If you just throw your trust into something, all that does is show weakness of character.

Mankind may change but man remains the same. My cell phone does nothing to keep me from doing wrong things. As a matter of fact I might be more inclined to do something wrong because of it. Technology doesn't change the nature of people. That should be obvious. Where is the utopia that you speak of? There is a scripture in the Bible that says in the last days they will be ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. It also says that in the last days knowledge shall abound. When the Bible was written the technology of the time had been unchanging for a very long time. These things were put in the Bible despite their seeming unlikely. Now look at the prophecy being fulfilled.

Because people are the same, whether they are modern or "primitive" (and "primitive" people might be more advanced than you think.) Humans need community and a sense of communion with something higher, not necessarily a god, but with a spirit--the spirit of good will, of society, of humanity. Religion is an acknowledgment, an institutionalization, of the need to be involved in a higher realm of human experience--to be part of something bigger, more important, *more*. Religion can be ignored, but it can never be outgrown, no matter how "modern" people get--religion transcends human development; moreover, it develops as humans develop.

becuase religion gives ppl spritual fulfillment and helps them feel as tho they have a purpose and they have something better(or worse) to look forward to when they pass. it gives a sense of discipline and honor. it gives you something to fall back on when you feel abandoned by your peers and gives u a higher power beyond your control or understanding to look to for answers. sense of faith and that someone will have your back when some superficial humans dont. sense of faith...believing what you dont see. its nice to imagine and have seomthing to wonder about other than will make the rent or is there anything in my teeth ya know?
