I have two Cockatiels (-- Nymphicus Hollandicus) and now I have them outside, even at night. But these past two days as the temperature drop a bit, at night it got to 20º C or 68º F, they became more blumped and fluffy feathers. Is this related with the drop of temperature, should I get them in or is this normal?

Do Cockatiels like being outside in the summer?

Cockatiels come from Australia, and so are actually combination tropical/desert birds. At 20 degrees C they are perfectly fine, as temperatures often get pretty cold at night in the desert. They fluff up to trap air between their feathers and keep themselves warm. You will also probably notice that they are huddled together. This is totally normal. That's how they sleep in nature.

However, I would keep an eye on the weather report, and if there's going to be a strong wind, definitely bring them inside. They don't react well to strong or constant winds, and in a cage they don't have anywhere to hide from them. Also, I would bring them inside if it gets much lower than 20 C outside at night, for the same reason. Birds' body temperatures are about 3-4 degrees C higher than the human body temperature. Therefore, cold weather feels colder to them than it does to us. So cold weather (within reason) won't hurt them, but to make them comfortable, keep them in the place where it's warmer -- outside in the summer and inside the rest of the year.

(While we're on the subject of temperature in bird cages, if your bird cage is located in full sunshine, either outside or inside the house, make sure there is shade for them to hide under in case it gets too hot.)

That seems a bit chilly for them, but it's OK, I guess.

COCKATIEL CARE TIPS

The following information is provided as a guide to help you get started with your Cockatiel and general tips on its care and maintenance. A Cockatiel is a high maintenance pet. It requires many hours of love daily, which it will then return to you. Cockatiels are extremely skittish, any high pitched sound (cell phone) or abrupt noise can send it off in a flight of terror, DO NOT take your bird outside unless it is properly caged and you stay within sight of it. Cockatiels are originally from Australia and are more of a tropical (warm) climate bird, however they can take cool temperatures well if no drafts occur. Even a tame Cockatiel might bite if startled, or mad (yes, they can have a temper, or feel jealous), so be extra careful around small children.

You shouldn't leave them outside. Birds are tropical meaning they like very warm weather. This weather is not normal for them. You don't want your little birdy to go into shock do you? Take it inside and bring it out another day. You shouldn't put it outside anyway because of the West Nile Virus.

68 degrees Fahrenheit is pretty much room temperature so I don't guess they'd have a problem with it unless they are accustomed to much higher temps. My cockatiel stops eating when it gets to about the mid 80s.

I study this two times. the way you layer longer tale-proper prose is admirable, and something I easily have a lot hardship with. you're making it look uncomplicated, organic, yet all those who write understand the alternative is genuine. I frequently degree the effectiveness of a chunk by the form of TD's........Jealousy rears it is eco-friendly head. Kudos to you, Mr Carney.

They fluff up because the catch air between themselves and their feathers and it helps keep them warm.
Why would you allow them to sleep outside when its that cool?
Would you sleep out their when its that cold? If not, you night want to rethink your actions.
