Because no one really knows whats going to happen when they die.
It is called fear.
Christians are scared they will be wrong.

I don't want to die, but I'm not afraid of death if that's what you mean??? My soul is secured... I'm a Christian, and if Jesus could die on the cross for my sins, then I can take a little pain. There is also the Rapture to consider if you are a Christian. Have a nice day!

It's instinct to do what it takes to stay alive so that we may reproduce! When we are faced with death, we don't want to die and give up the body and the earth, and we hope for paradise for our souls.

People fear the unknown. No matter how much people believe in the afterlife...they still don't know for sure.
Personally, I think its a built-in, self preservation gene that can only be conquered by something too good to be true...like 70 virgins.

Dunno, dying doesn't sound bad.
Perhaps they're fearful because they aren't going to paradies. Or they'll miss their loved ones.
