FICO says "Note that it's OK to request and check your own credit report. This won't affect your score, as long as you order your credit report directly from the credit reporting agency or through an organization authorized to provide credit reports to consumers."

This doesn't answer your question, I realize. I'd say if you got to them through an obnoxious flashing banner ad (or maybe any banner ad), pop-up, or high-pressure sales tactic, I'd steer clear.

http://www.annualcreditreport.com will give you a legitimate credit report, in all likelihood for free.

No, it won't lower it at all... no matter how many times you check it.
The only inquiries that will make your score go down, is credit inquiries that are the result of applying for credit.
You are doing a smart thing by checking your credit, you won't be penalized for it.
To follow up on the post that says you can get 1 free credit report per year: You can actually get 1 free report (does not include score) from each of the three credit bureaus each year. So you get 3 free reports per year.

If your credit report is pulled often it can lower the score. It also will make lenders wonder WHY your report is so often being pulled. It makes it seem like you are applying for a lot of things, etc. . . .But, it is advised you check it once a year and if it's just that often it will not lower it. If you're using an agency print out that you signed up for a credit report there, and then if a lender questions why your report was pulled you'll have proof it was you.

You are entitled to 1 free credit report per year from each of the reporting agencies. Consumer instituted credit checks do not count against that consumer.

Use this website to obtain your report. You can request reports from the CRA's all at one time or you can check them individually over the course of the year.

I understand that any time you have an inquiry on your credit, it shows up on your report and lowers the score by a couple of points. I don't THINK your own inquiry into your own history gives you a penalty but you really need to ask a loan officer at your bank to be sure.

No, and it will not be free! They will want you to sign up for monthly credit reports for approx. $30. You can now get 1 free credit report (by law) at www.annualcreditreport.com--per year.
