It gives those sick demented scientists a way to get their jollies without having to torture and kill people.

Although diseases differ from species to species, our (human) bodies are much more similar to other mammals than you might think. Scientific research on animals has helped make great strides towards developing cures and treatments for numerous diseases, in addition to helping us gain a better understanding of the human body. For example, every protein in the human body has some kind of equivalent in other animals, so by studying them, we can learn more about how the human body works. New surgeries or other care methods are first researched through animals to make sure they are safe for humans.
Most scientific animals are treated with great respect in the lab. I'll admit, their fates aren't pleasant, but they're fed well and the scientists do everything they can to reduce their pain and anxiety. I'm not so supportive of companies that do testing on animals for cosmetic or other non-medical products. Research done frivolously or without a noble purpose (although, who can really agree on what is noble?) should be stopped.

Alot of advances come from animal testing. The insulin that diabetics take is manufactured from dogs (One of the higher ups in PETA is diabetic...and uses the dog based insulin). Things have been proven to be carcinogenic to humans by proving the same in rats, sacharin for instance. By studying why and how some animals are resistant to certain illnesses and conditions, gives insight into how humans can be treated for them. If a certain medication proves toxic to a labrat, we can fix it so that it isn't toxic to people. You're right, disease do vary, but there are enough common links that can be used to gain the knowledge to treat them in humans. Honestly, wouldn't you rather have the deaths of 1000 labrats if you could save your grandparents from suffering with Alzheimer's Disease or Parkinson"s?
Don't buy into the PETA bs. Check their records...they must be public since they're a non profit organization. They won't publicize how many animals they euthanize, but they must report it for tax purposes.
