Music is not really movement, but rather a way of communicating and inspiring movement. Music, when performed, creates rhythms and gestures that may suggest certain emotional states, but it is actually incapable of actually communicating emotion itself. You can understand what I mean if you think about the fact that people often disagree about what a song means or what emotion is communicated, but we all can move our bodies to the music and no one ever really does the wrong kind of movement (unless they are intentionally going against the music's flow). We can thus conclude that emotions themselves are not *carried* in the music or *evoked* by the music, but instead *suggested* gesturally when the music is performed. It is only in this sense that music can be a universal language. Music expresses motion (not emotion) that can be embodied by anyone--by performing, hearing, dancing to, or even imagining it--without reference to any particular culture or native tongue.

music is the motion of pitches in rhythm happening in real time. in contrast, paintings can be admired at any time. music must be performed or played back. therefore, music is definitely movement.
