not any time soon, current solar conversion rate and efficiency is so low and the cost of production is so high, it is very unpractical for its use. Power grids with backup batteries must also be setup to supply power in less than optimal solar energy levels which adds more cost. Land size and location will also play in consideration since the area must have high solar energy year round with minimal clouds and rain. Bottom line... it cost too much... currently solar energy on average cost 5 times more than electricity produce from coal.

Photovoltaic cell are not nearly efficient enough the be a big part of electrical production. Solar thermal (light heats a liquid used to drive a generator) is much more likely.

As the efficiency of the photovoltaic cells increase and the price of fossil fuels increase, they will become increasingly attractive as a power source.

eventually, the majority of power used by all industrialized countries, and perhaps even more so by non-industrialized countries will be generated by the sun, of which depending on the progress of the PV technology will comprise from 20% to 60% of this power.

No. The energy cost to produce a PV cell is nearly as great as the energy produced by the cell in its lifetime. With current technology, the economics of PV are shaky.

gas stations in california already cover the pump area with them.
they payback is like 1/2 to 1/3 the lifespan.
and they can put near the demand so you dont have to run big power lines.

It will more applicalbe in low energy density area because of low power demand and high power generation cost.
