Baby, they're all the same, sometimes it's from the same factory. When it's time for the National brand to finish then the store label brands start on the assembly line. When the patent expires, the local store can pick up the product and use their labeling. Look at Wal-Mart, do you think they have all those factories in operation? Canning vegetables, frozen veggies, a detergent factory, a dry goods factory (flour, sugar) NOPE.

for personal care, anything from wal-mart's "equate" brand is just as good (for some things, i personally think better) than the name brand. and so much cheaper.

for groceries, it's going to be largely store-dependent. some stores have great generic brands, and other stores don't. it's not like it's going to be inedible though. just give it a try and see. if the taste is not as good, then finish it up (it's still food) and don't buy it again.

I used to work at a supermarket and sometimes generic and name brands came from the same place - the contents are identical, but not the labels and the prices.
You just have to try stuff out.
